Malcolm BuickCreative Director


Malcolm is a partner and creative director at Athletics. A proud Scotsman educated in London, Malcolm has more than 20 years of brand design experience. His career began in London at a number of small design studios—Pure Design, Form Design, and Zip Design—where he focused on music branding while dabbling in the rockstar life. Seeking a change of scenery, Malcolm moved to a place as bucolic as his native Scotland—Burlington, Vermont—where he served as creative lead at Jager Di Paola Kemp. While at JDK, Malcolm was instrumental in evolving Burton Snowboards from niche brand to global lifestyle force. A memory from this period stands out: dropping into a mountain chute at 14,000 feet via helicopter with a team of professional snowboarders. Malcolm later settled in New York, taking on the role of creative director for world-renowned branding agency Wolff Olins. At Wolff, Malcolm led brand development for clients such as Microsoft, Belkin, and AOL, for whom Malcolm traveled the world, art-directing still and motion shoots. Getting back to his roots in more intimate, creatively-flexible studio environments, Malcolm joined Athletics as a partner in 2014. He now leads projects for clients including IBM, Nike, MLS, and MoMA. Malcolm appreciates the diverse skills of team Athletics, and the studio’s capacity to design, with reason, creative initiatives that deeply change organizations and the people within.
