Miscellaneous

Dear friends,

July finds wise New Yorkers fleeing the heat mirage of New York for the rolling foothills of the Catskill mountains, breezy coastlines of Rockaway and Jersey, or sun-kissed destinations farther afield. When we’re back in town, we might take refuge with a book (like Rachel Cusk’s subtly genius novel, Transit) in the shade of a Prospect Park oak, bask in the delightfully air-conditioned Metropolitan Museum (where Ragnar Kjartansson’s latest transcendent video installation, Death is Everywhere, is on view), or sip a cold beverage on some rooftop watching the sunset while listening to the sounds of summer (if it’s daytime, might we recommend Bruce’s new record: Western Stars, if nighttime, spin Mark Ronson’s Late Night Feelings). Wherever July finds you, we hope the July, 2019 edition of Miscellaneous — Athletics’ no-frills round-up of the cultural items that inspire us each month — keeps you cool, collected, and culturally satisfied.

Stay tuned for more editions of Miscellaneous in the coming months.

Poetic Fragment
“Haze. Three student violists boarding
a bus. A clatter of jackhammers.
Granular light. A film of sweat for primer
and the heat for a coat of paint.”

— From “Morningside Heights, July” by William Matthews (1998)
